Abrasion and Scratch Resistance
Tough stuff
Abrasion and scratch resistance are key components in coating formulations. The more durable a coating is, the longer it lasts and the less frequently recoating is needed.
Colloidal silica can improve these qualities in two ways. First, the high number of hydroxyl surface groups present in colloidal silica particles allows them to cross-link with reactive groups of an organic resin. The result is simple; it increases the cross-linking density and resultant enhancement of the abrasion resistance of the polymer matrix. Second, the colloidal silica particles can be seen as small glass particles with a hardness of about 5.5 on the Mohr scale, exceeding any organic resin. When enriched in the surface layer of a coating, hardness can be significantly improved.
This function is especially desired in paint and lacquers as well as OPP films, non-stick coatings, and electric steel.
