Promoting adhesion to a surface is not always about applying an adhesive.  In some cases, regular adhesives are not an option.  Colloidal silica particles, especially silane modified silica dispersions, have a high number of hydroxyl surface groups that can interact with other chemical groups (i.e. oxide, hydroxyl or carboxylic groups) on substrates.

Colloidal silica is one of the few materials that can enhance glass adhesion in a resin based coating.  On mineral substrates, silica will form strong calcium silicate bonds and enhance adhesion.  Colloidal silica also will reduce shrinkage of the polymer matrix in lacquers during drying.  In adhesives, they can be used to assist in the stabilization of waterborne emulsions.
