Anti soiling

 

Ever notice how things seem to attract dirt?  It’s because, in their own special way, they do!  This is due to the fact that most surfaces are not very hydrophilic, or to put it simply, water loving.  Hydrophobic dirt sticks to the surface and then can only be removed with manual cleaning.

The silica particles in colloidal silica dispersions have fully hydroxylated surfaces (many surface hydroxyl-silanol groups) and are very hydrophilic.  When such materials are deposited onto or incorporated into a surface, the result is that it inherits the hydrophilic nature and thus making it harder for the hydrophobic dirt to adhere to the surface.  An additional benefit is that the surface is easily maintained by either rainfall or simple cleaning as the dirt rinses away from the surface.

This functionality is desired not only in coatings formulations, but also for cleaning applications on ceramics, fabrics, glass, and metal.
