Sometimes, you may need an extra barrier to help against certain situations. By enhancing the cross-linking density of a coating can, we can improve the coating's barrier effect against gas permeation, which includes oxygen or smell penetration.
The silica particles can enhance the organic matrix by filling the voids with inorganic, gas impermeable particles, which then acts as a barrier. This function is used predominantly with oriented polypropylene (OPP) films.
