Binding
Hand-in-hand...or bond-to-bond
Though the main function is the same, the binding applications can be divided into three different areas:
At high temperatures, the silica will form a fused inorganic matrix. In investment casting, ceramics, and catalyst applications, the silica particle will sinter and bind the formulation components together. In electric steel applications, the sintered silica forms a glassy surface coating.
At lower temperatures, the silica can also form an inorganic matrix based on chemical bonds. In zinc rich primers, the system will gel to form an inorganic binder. In cementitious systems, the colloidal silica will also gel and create calcium-silicate bonds.
In a polymer resin based matrix, the surface groups of silane modified silica particles can react and cross-link with resin groups. This provides additional binding for the coating system.
