Flocculation

Charged solids removal

water

Flocculation is a mechanism of solid removal combining contact and adhesion.  If the suspension is electrically destabilized, the suspended particles will form larger-size clusters - called floc.

The combination of a highly negative surface charge and a high specific surface area makes colloidal silica an effective tool to destabilize suspensions - especially in combination with anionic and cationic polymers.  This function is utilized with in refractory fiber bonding and beverage fining or water treatment.
