Sometimes surfaces and materials are just too smooth and all you need is some friction for efficient use in your application.

Colloidal silica dispersions have the ability to increase the friction coefficient on a surface when applied in a coating.  Not only is there a mechanical interaction with the small particles, the high number of reactive surface groups can also interact with other surfaces.  One popular application for this is for the surface treatment of paper to increase slide angles.  Colloidal silica can also have frictionizing improvement in the hand and weave stability for textiles.
