Colloidal silica particles are similar to small grains of sand - SiO2. The small, hard particles in the dispersion can be used as very fine, liquid sandpaper. One popular application for this is in the polishing of electronics - either for mechanical polishing or for chemical mechanical planarization. Other substrates such as glass and sapphire can also be polished effectively with colloidal silica.
