Household and I&I cleaning formulations can perform their magic due to a combination of components which each have their own function. Naturally, surfactants are responsible for a substantial part of the action, but they cannot do the job on their own.

An essential ingredient in all hard surface cleaning formulations is the chelating agent or builder. Chelating agents have a unique property: they can form soluble complexes with metal ions. This functionality enables them to:

- soften the water
- boost the hygienic cleaning action.
