All ethanolamines are used extensively in the manufacture of detergents, in gas sweetening, textile additives, lubricants, cutting oils, surface coatings, in polyols for polyurethanes, in cyanide-free electroplating, pharmaceuticals and countless other applications. MEA (monoethanolamine) is mainly used in sweetening natural gas and coal gas, and as soaps or amides in heavy-duty detergents. MEA is also used in the production of ethylene amines.
DEA (diethanolamine) is mainly used for gas sweetening and in the manufacture of light-duty detergents and shampoos. DEA can also be cyclisised to make morpholine.
BA-10 (Berolamine-10), which mostly consists of TEA (triethanolamine), is used as a grinding aid for cement to reduce energy consumption.
