One of our most important innovations at Eka is Compozil, the first comprehensive retention system. Over the years, we have continued to develop the system with more advanced silica nano particle technology combined with new polymers and anionic trash catchers. Today, the Compozil portfolio even includes dual polymer systems. No matter where you are, our experts are always close to your operations to help you choose what is right for your process.
Our qualified paper specialists are evenly distributed throughout the papermaking world. If you’re in North America, you’re welcome to contact our senior papermaking specialist Dan Pernsteiner. And if you’re in China, give Martin Chen, one of our senior account managers, a call. Both of them have a particular competence and interest in retention which has contributed to many mills’ productivity.
Hands-on expertise
Dan says, "Retention is the core of efficient and profitable papermaking. I have dealt with many of the issues and problems. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin and before joining Eka in 2001, I worked for a paper mill for fifteen years. So when I work with customers onsite, I bring a combination of chemical solutions and practical insight and experience."
Martin’s background is similar. "I’ve been with Eka since 2004. Prior to that, I worked at the Stora Enso Suzhou mill, hands-on. I still spend approximately 60 percent of my time at mills, working directly with staff at all levels."
Quick benefits
Both Dan and Martin admit to the rush when solutions exceed expectations (including their own) – and that’s why they’re dedicated to Compozil.
Dan says, "Compozil is a blend of experience, know-how and business sense. A sure way to get dollar value for what you spend. It’s quite an impressive system, extremely reactive in processes. I’ve seen trials speed up machines by several hundred feet per minute. And one time, the only thing that stopped the trial was the fact that the supply of pulp couldn’t keep up. Compozil makes more filler loading possible, which is especially interesting today, when most mills need to find new ways of working in order to prosper."
Optimizing papermaking
Since Eka invented and launched Compozil in the early 80s, the retention system has been developed many times over and new components have been added to meet customer needs.
Or as Dan puts it, "We are still the technology leaders!"
Additional proof of what Compozil achieves on the bottom line can be found at Gold East mill, where Martin has worked closely with them on the application of Compozil Fx. Today, Gold East’s huge, advanced machines (actually the world’s largest) are running even faster and even better.
"Compozil provides savings by optimizing processes and quality,” says Martin. “Close working relationships make it all come together. It’s a constant challenge to improve, but we can deliver. And if I can’t resolve an issue myself, I act fast and make sure the right expert assists the customer. We’re a dedicated team."
