AkzoNobel food grade chelates certified under FSSC 22000
AkzoNobel’s global Chelates business is pleased to announce that its food grade chelates, used as food stabilizers and nutrient components, received the Food Safety System Certification (FSSC 22000).The FSSC 22000 is based on the internationally recognized standard ISO 22000 and the British Standards Institute (BSI) specification PAS 220. This certification has recently gained full approval by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) following an extensive benchmarking process using international standards based on industry best practices and sound science.
AkzoNobel’s food grade chelates, which include calcium disodium EDTA, disodium EDTA and the Ferrazone
® brand ferric sodium EDTA are produced in the Netherlands and sold globally. Ferrazone
® is used as a bioavailable source of iron in national food fortification programs as well as in fortified packaged food. This certification ensures that products are of the highest quality and have been processed with food safety programs meeting the stringent food safety requirements .
Safety of food ingredients is a matter of worldwide concern. AkzoNobel has taken pro-active steps to ensure proper procedures for the processing of its food grade chelates throughout the supply chain. The FSSC 22000 certification is part of ongoing practices and food safety procedures.
A report, recently published by fortification experts, concludes that ferric sodium EDTA, marketed by AkzoNobel as Ferrazone
®, is the only suitable iron source for high extraction flour and the best technical recommendation for low extraction flour in wheat and maize flour fortification.
