Energy

Utility provider by excellence

AkzoNobel Industrial Chemicals

Industrial Chemicals operates three combined heat & power plants in the Netherlands. Together with the energy company Essent our sub BU Energy has a joint venture at the site Delfzijl (Delesto BV). Energy operates this power plant on behalf of the joint-venture partners.

The fully owned combined heat & power plant Salinco at the site Hengelo is also operated by Energy.

The operations of the third power plant of Industrial Chemicals, the EVB at the Rotterdam Botlek site, are integrated into our Chlor-Alkali business. The EVB produces among other things 20 MW electricity.

Delesto BV
Delesto BV, a 50%-50% joint venture, is a modern natural gas powered co-generation plant that provides steam and electricity to the various customers at the Chemical Park Delfzijl. Delesto supplies steam (700 tonnes/hr), electricity (530 MW) and other utility products.

The products are supplied to many plants at the Chemical Park Delfzijl; however, the major part of the generated electricity is supplied to the public grid. By extensive application of the energy efficient combined heat and power technology, Delesto contributes significantly to alleviating the pressure on the environment at the Chemical Park Delfzijl.

Salinco
Salinco supplies electricity, steam, compressed air and water to its customers at the Hengelo site.

Salinco supplies steam (250 tonnes/hour) and electricity (80 MW, of which 15 MW is required to run the salt processes on the Hengelo site). A large part of the generated electricity is supplied to the public grid through the Delesto portfolio. In addition to steam and electricity, Salinco also deals with the cooling water (6,000 m3/hour). This is pumped from the Twente Canal and conducted through a closed cooling system so that it does not come into direct contact with the operating processes. The cooling water is returned to the canal after its temperature has been reduced in two cooling towers. Salinco also produces 5,500 m3 of compressed air per hour.
