Safety & Environment

An extensive program to study the influence of Dimethyl ether on the environment has been carried out. In 1985 a report was published by the Dutch Ministry of a.o. the Environment. This report has been regularly updated and completed by new studies.

It has been proven that Dimethyl ether is not converted in presence of chlorine radicals and no peroxides are spontaneously formed. The evaporation of Dimethyl ether from water in open systems is rapid, within hours, so Dimethyl ether does not present any risk to the aquatic environment and showed in closed vessel tests not any toxic effect to fish up to concentrations of 4 gram per liter. Dimethyl ether is degraded by an photochemical reaction with OH radicals which results in degradation products carbon dioxide and water.

Toxicological Aspects

An extensive program to study the toxicology of Dimethyl ether has been carried out. In 1985 a report was published by the Dutch Ministry of a.o. the Environment. This report has been regularly updated and completed by new studies.
Dimethyl ether is not mutagenic, carcinogenic or teratogenic. Dimethyl ether has shown a very low toxicity after acute as well as after chronic inhalation exposure. Only at very high levels Dimethyl ether shows narcotic properties. Detailed information is available upon request.
