Salt tends to cake when transported or stored without special additives. Up until now, this is usually prevented by adding ferrocyanide (also called YPS), a powerful anti-caking agent for salt which was developed by AkzoNobel in the 1950s. The additive prevents lumps forming and made it instantly ready for use in industry.
However, ferrocyanide is not removed during brine purification. It decomposes into ‘free’ iron and cyanide when it enters the membrane electrolysis cell, components which can negatively affect the cell’s performance.

在没有特殊添加剂的情况下, 盐在运输或者储存时会易于结块。 截至目前为止,这通常是由添加亚铁氰化物来预防的(在中国常见为亚铁氰化钾)。这种强大的盐抗结块剂是由阿克苏诺贝尔在20世纪50年代发明的, 可以预防块状形成并使盐即时可以在工业中使用。
然而,亚铁氰化钾不会在卤水净化中被除掉。它会分解成游离的铁离子和氰化物进入离子膜电解槽, 从而负面的影响了电解槽的性能。因此,能源消耗逐步的增加并且不可逆转的损害会缩短离子膜的使用寿命。
