Color & Effects

Color & Effects 1 Color & Effects 2

Just as important as its function in protecting a substrate, is its color. It’s the most immediate, and arguably most impacting aspect of a coating. Color is sensual in the way it evokes emotion in people – be it on a wall, a car, a bridge or an airplane even. No matter how good the coating is in terms of its performance - if the color isn’t just right for the customer, he or she will never be entirely happy with the product.

This is true for many businesses in AkzoNobel. They may coat and color different types of substrates in different ways, but they all share common goals in using color to beautify and produce aesthetically appealing effects and finishes.

The CoP brings together expertise on tools for measuring color, color consistency and retrieval systems, which increasingly involves the digitization of color to enable the accurate reproduction of any color on and in any medium. In addition the CoP  focuses on subtle surface texture effects that can  be induced by color, such as glint, sparkle and coarseness, and achieved by, for example, the use of metallic or pearlescent flakes in automotive finishes.

  • Color perception & visualization
  • Theory & modeling of colorimetry
