Introducing Foul Release Technology to the Yacht Market

Intersleek Pro

International Yacht Paint has announced the launch of Intersleek Pro, foul release technology targeted specifically at the pleasure craft market. The launch signals the introduction of a new category of products within the International yacht range, marking a departure from the traditional biocidal antifouling product offer.

Intersleek Pro has been developed in recognition of International Paint’s commitment to reduce its impact on the environment without compromising customer performance expectations. This unique, patented, fluoropolymer technology – exclusive to International Paint – provides a biocide-free hull coating that deters fouling and delivers significant fuel savings, increased speed, enhanced racing performance and an exceptional high-gloss aesthetic finish.

As well as controlling fouling, the smooth, "low-energy" profile of the paint film also delivers a considerable reduction in drag, as less friction is created when moving through the water. This, in turn, enables greater manoeuvrability and responsiveness; sail boats will notice an increase in speed through the water and improved cornering, particularly with regular cleaning. Lisa Ratcliff, Product Manager, adds: “Speed increases of up to 10% have been reported during product trials.”

Intersleek Pro is completely biocide-free, meaning it does not release active ingredients into the marine environment. Fouling control works on a purely physical basis and is due to the amphiphilic nature of the coating. Amphiphilic surfaces have both hydrophilic (water-loving) and hydrophobic (water-hating) properties. This confuses – and discourages – organisms as they try to settle on the coating surface. Those that do can only attach very weakly, meaning they are easily "released" when the yacht is moving or removed during routine cleaning.

Intersleek Pro is effective as long as the paint system remains intact. By following the recommended maintenance advice, Intersleek Pro can perform significantly longer than conventional biocidal antifoulings.

Intersleek Pro will be available in the Netherlands from March 2012.
