AkzoNobel Surface Chemistry is pleased to announce that its Berol® PBX surfactant product has been granted Design for Environment (DfE) certification by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Readily biodegradable, with low aquatic toxicity, and chlorine-free, Berol® PBX has been determined to meet the DfE criteria for rate of biodegradation and level of aquatic toxicity set for surfactants, and is therefore considered ideal for use in cleaning products recognized by the EPA’s DfE Formulator Program. In addition, Berol® PBX concentrate is listed on CleanGredients, the EPA- and ISSA-sponsored online database of cleaning-product ingredient chemicals that provides verified information about the environmental and human health attributes of listed ingredients.

Berol ® PBX is a unique concentrate that contains gentle but effective stain-fighting oxidants and surfactants for use in premium-performance spot removers and as a raw material in oxidative cleaning products. Easy to apply, it works as a pre-treatment stain fighter when sprayed on a variety of fabrics, such as clothing, linen and table cloths, prior to laundering and as a stain remover when sprayed directly on carpets. In addition, Berol® PBX concentrate can be used to formulate safer and effective non-chlorine liquid bleach products for laundry and bathroom cleaners.

Performance tests conducted by AkzoNobel Surface Chemistry have demonstrated that Berol® PBX concentrate, diluted to one part concentrate to six parts deionized water, outperforms a leading U.S. carpet cleaner in the removal of a variety of common household stains, including tea, chocolate syrup, tomato sauce, red wine, and yellow mustard. Diluting Berol® PBX concentrate by 1:6 ensures that its active oxygen level stays below 3%, which enables the fabric to retain its colorfastness. Berol® PBX is also effective in removing offensive odors, especially those related to pets, from many substrates.
