AkzoNobel is officially the global leader in sustainability in the chemicals industry

In 2007 the prestigious Dow Jones Sustainability World Indexes (DJSI) gave us our best-ever mark, making AkzoNobel number one in the chemicals industry. We’ve also been listed on the FTSE Group’s FTSE4Good Index.

The DJSI is one of the world’s foremost sustainability indices, benchmarking the performance of leading companies. It rates companies on their environmental, social and economic performance, including forward-looking financial indicators. Compared to our peers, AkzoNobel is number one when it comes to the use of renewables, carbon emissions and energy efficiency.

Commenting on our leading position, CEO Hans Wijers said: “This is a clear message, based on independent research, that our strategy is paying off. As a company we’re well positioned to deliver sustainable solutions for our customers, while at the same time creating top-line growth. The top rating on the DJSI World Index is testament to the collective effort made by our employees around the world to embrace sustainable business practices.”

The FTSE4Good Index is the European equivalent of the DJSI and is used by investors to see if a company meets globally recognized sustainability standards. Specifically, it looks at an organization’s environmental sustainability, positive relationships with stakeholders and support of universal human rights.

AkzoNobel was listed on the FTSE4Good index in 2006.

We were also named “best in class” for our environmental and social performance, which means we qualify for investment in Storebrand’s Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) mandates. Storebrand is a top Scandinavian company in pensions, life and health insurance, asset management and banking. It’s considered a leading player in SRI.
