Replacing an HCl Stripper Column

HCL

What was at stake?
We were asked to replace a 30-year-old hydrochloric acid (HCl) stripper column with a new state-of-the-art column.

What we did
We demolished the existing column and assembled the brick lining for the new column in situ during the winter, using special weather protection. We lifted the brick-lined column into its final position – a delicate operation – without cracking. We refurbished the existing foundations and installed anchor bolts, completing the project during a Maintenance Stop lasting just three weeks.

Added value
We took a multidisciplinary team approach involving specialists, including staff from Purchasing, Health, Safety & Environment and the Materials Corrosion Centre. A Detailed Engineering package was delivered to the contractors and the project was completed on schedule and within budget. Operations are now much more reliable with the newly installed column.
