Renewable Raw Materials
AkzoNobel is already an extensive user of renewable raw materials (RRMs): notable examples include Surface Chemistry, nearly 50% of whose surfactants and personal care products are derived from natural products and Decorative Paints who are now selling latex paints based on vegetable oils. The company's need for knowledge of and capabilities in RRMs will grow significantly in the future, if only to reduce the impact of oil price volatility and avoid security of supply problems of the petrochemically-derived raw materials we buy, reduce the environmental burden of our products and provide new sources of functionally rich raw materials from which we can develop novel products with differentiated effects and properties.
The role of the CoP is to promote and share our knowledge and know-how about RRMs; monitor, assess and disseminate external RRM-related technology, competitor, supply chain, marketplace and regulatory developments; and pro-actively seek RRM solutions and develop business cases for AkzoNobel investment, as appropriate.
