Purpose/Key Objective of the Position:

A Chemist in the Solutions Team is responsible for coating technologies sold in the food and beverage marketplaces which can include steel and aluminum cans. As a Chemist in R&D, you will be responsible to complete assigned projects with minimal supervision while promoting a safe work environment.

Regardless of the assignment, a chemist will select appropriate procedures and materials, with minimal guidance, for performing their assigned tasks related to product development and day-to-day problem solving. A chemist fully understands a broad range of application test methods and the underpinning science, or can quickly learn. A chemist is comfortable performing both standardized and non-standardized laboratory tasks. This chemist will also be able to translate and transfer laboratory work knowledge to production scale-up.

This is a continuing developmental level position. A high degree of personal initiative demonstrated by, among other things, a drive to understand the underlying “cause and effect” relationships within the context of formulating finished products is essential. This understanding will develop and enhance the chemist’s skills necessary for evaluation, development, and problem-solving.

Key Responsibilities:
- Ability to handle standard product developments, normal product maintenance and raw material evaluation with little direct supervision.

- Formulate coatings to meet regional or customer-specific requirements.

- Capable of small-scale production and with ability to learn principles of production scale-up.

- Ability to handle increased amounts of unsupervised interaction with customers, sales, technical service, quality control, production, and/or suppliers.

- Ability to handle testing programs and/or test equipment.

- Responsible for the timely completion of specific project assignments which involve segments of major project objectives.

- Maintains detailed laboratory records and can translate data into clear, well-written technical reports.

- Promotes safety and environmental awareness by ensuring that standards, policies, and procedures are adhered to in compliance with corporate, federal, state, and local requirements.

- May be required to supervise technicians, entry-level chemists and temporary employees.

- Performs additional duties as required.
