Global Media and Public Affairs manager

Provide strategic communication, reputation and public affairs expertise for our global business

AkzoNobel creates everyday essentials to make people’s lives more liveable and inspiring. We are a leading global producer of paints, coatings and specialty chemicals, supplying essential ingredients, essential protection and essential color to industries and consumers worldwide.

Our organization contains three business areas (BAs): Decorative Paints, Performance Coatings and Specialty Chemicals. Each BA maintains an ongoing conversation with a number of external entities in order to build the relationships that will help us to meet our business objectives.

Thus your mission in this role is to act as a high level external communications professional for one of the three BAs, Specialty Chemicals, translating media and reputation improvement and Public Affairs into strong business outcomes
Specialty Chemicals supplies customers around the world with ingredients for the manufacture of life’s essentials. Our products are used in, among others, paints, detergents, foods, plastics, cosmetics, construction, pulp and paper, pharmaceuticals, electronics, agriculture and for plastics. Our products can be used in a variety of ways. For example, as basic building blocks of manufactured products, in the processing of raw materials, as intermediates used to produce finished goods, or they may be used to enhance the functionality and durability of manufactured products. You’ll find us in the food you eat, the buildings you live and work in, the vehicles and roads you use to move around, as well as everyday items such as paper products and your children’s toys.
Is this a challenge that matches your skills and ambitions? Do you have experience of complex communication issues, crisis communications and spokesmanship? Have you built a strong and established network (traditional and non-traditional) in media, governments, industry influencers and other key opinion leaders? Do you enjoy translating complex issues into opportunities? Can you demonstrate an ability to shape the regulatory landscape to improve the operating environment of an organization? Above all, do you have what it takes to make a real difference within our dynamic, multinational and multicultural business environment?
If you offer all this and more we invite you to apply for the position of

Global Media and Public Affairs manager

The role and its responsibilities
The position is based at our global headquarters in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and forms part of AkzoNobel’s Global Communications and Public Affairs Function. The position reports to the Director Communications and Public Affairs Specialty Chemicals.

In this position you are responsible for setting the external relations strategy (media and Public Affairs) for Specialty Chemicals including its world leading products and brands. This requires you to work with internal stakeholders around the globe to identify and develop communication initiatives (e.g. sustainability, innovation and Human Cities stories) that will help building and protecting AkzoNobel’s brands and reputation.

A central part of the role lies in developing campaigns (in close co-operation with the global media, Public Affairs and creative services team) that can be adapted and activated in key markets across the world. In doing so you ensure that business and local teams have the right process and materials to deliver against the global strategy. These programs should be delivered through traditional and digital media.

Given the highly regulated nature of the industries in which we operate, you are required to understand the legislative landscape impacting the chemicals industry and apply the relevant proactive or reactive programs to respond. In addition you are required to provide strategic and operational advice and support in case of crisis and issues.

On an ongoing basis you monitor and report progress against agreed external communications (traditional and non-traditional) targets and objectives (share of voice, tone of voice, message penetration etc).

Further, you establish and execute consistent and seamless processes for media relations, crisis/issues communications and public affairs across the BA. At all times you seek to build strong working relationships across all businesses within the BA, identifying opportunities and risks that can benefit or harm AkzoNobel’s reputation and developing and driving related activities and communication plans.
You also develop clear policy positions and appropriate engagement/advocacy strategies, working closely with the global communications team to ensure consistency and alignment.
