About AkzoNobel

AkzoNobel is a leading global paints and coatings company and a major producer of specialty chemicals, with leading market positions and brands in countries around the world. We operate in a number of important market segments ranging from buildings and infrastructure to transport, industrial and consumer goods. We’re also the sector leader in sustainability and are number one in the renowned Dow Jones Sustainability Index. In practical terms, that means our sustainable solutions are in your lives, and those of your friends and family, every day. We’re the people that make it possible for you to do what you need to do.

Bring high-level (digital) communications skills and experience to a strategic role within the Business Area of a leading organization
AkzoNobel creates everyday essentials to make people’s lives more liveable and inspiring. We are a leading global producer of paints, coatings and specialty chemicals, supplying essential ingredients, essential protection and essential color to industries and consumers worldwide.
Our organization contains three business areas (BAs): Decorative Paints, Performance Coatings and Specialty Chemicals. Each BA maintains an ongoing conversation with a number of external entities in order to build the relationships that will help us to meet our business objectives.
Thus your mission in this role is to act as a high level external communications professional for one of the three BAs, translating media and reputation improvement into strong business outcomes for your BA.
Is this a challenge that matches your skills and ambitions? Do you have experience of complex communication issues, crisis communications and spokesmanship? Have you built a strong and established network (traditional and non-traditional) in media, governments, industry influencers and other key opinion leaders? Can you demonstrate an ability to shape the regulatory landscape to improve the operating environment of an organization? Above all, do you have what it takes to make a real difference within our dynamic, multinational and multicultural business environment?
If you offer all this and more we invite you to apply for one of three positions as an
External Communications Specialist
The role and its responsibilities
Each of these positions is based at our global headquarters in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and forms part of AkzoNobel’s Global Communications and Public Affairs Function. Each position reports to the Director Communications for the relevant BA – Decorative Paints, Performance Coatings or Specialty Chemicals.
In each position you are responsible for setting the external communications strategy for the BA   including its world leading products and brands. This requires you to work with internal stakeholders to identify and develop communication initiatives (e.g. sustainability projects, innovation and Human Cities stories) that will help build AkzoNobel’s reputation. The role also serves the AkzoNobel corporate brand meaning that the communications program must also support the mother brand’s key reputation drivers.
A central part of each role lies in developing campaigns (in close co-operation with the global media and creative services team) that can be adapted and activated in key markets across the world. In doing so you ensure that local teams have the right process and materials to deliver against the global strategy. These programs should be delivered through a traditional and digital media ensuring that all activity is tracked for performance.
Given the highly regulated nature of the industries in which we operate, you are required to understand the legislative landscape impacting on the BA and apply the relevant proactive or reactive programs to respond.
On an ongoing basis you monitor and report progress against agreed external communications (traditional and non-traditional) targets and objectives (share of voice, tone of voice, message penetration etc) as defined by the global media relations function and market objectives.
At all times you seek to build strong working relationships across all businesses and regions within the BA, identifying opportunities and risks that can benefit or harm AkzoNobel’s reputation and developing and driving related activities and communication plans.
Further, you establish and execute consistent and seamless processes for media relations management across the BA, including alignment with relevant stakeholders on matters of material importance to AkzoNobel to protect and enhance AkzoNobel’s reputation.
You also develop clear policy positions and appropriate engagement/advocacy strategies, working closely with the global communications team to ensure consistency and alignment.
