An influential international role for a committed finance professional focused on excellence and improvement

AkzoNobel’s Performance Coatings (PC) business area (BA) produces a number of leading products and brands for global markets.

Within this context, you are also responsible for the timely, adequate and reliable monthly financial closing process for two Strategic Market Units (SMU). In doing so you ensure the quality of this process and monitor the quality of the balance sheet and P&L. Further, you provide functional direction, training and support to local reporting units, making regular visits.

The role and its responsibilities
This role is currently based at our site at Sassenheim, the Netherlands, but might relocate in the future to Arnhem, the Netherlands. You perform a number of key activities:

Consolidation and quality
You ensure the quality, effectiveness and efficiency of financial reporting to SMU management and Corporate. You also assist the SMU accounting manager with the correct consolidation of monthly SMU numbers, and you assume overall accountability for the correct and timely financial reporting of the respective reporting entities to the business area.

Further, you act as IFRS accounting expert towards the reporting entities and ensure compliance with the AkzoNobel accounting manual (WEB FEM), and you assist with implementing new accounting and reporting guidelines or procedures.

Monthly closing process
You plan the month-end closing activities in consultation with Consolidation & Reporting, and review monthly reporting submitted (by local units) to ensure quality of reporting. Further, you directly ensure timely, adequate and reliable monthly financial closing process for one/two SMU(s), managing all relevant central consolidation and elimination adjustments.

You provide feedback to local reporting entities on quality delivered during month-end closing process.

Accounting performance reporting units
You pro-actively monitor the quality of the balance sheet and statement of income for the respective reporting entities. This requires you to work closely with the local accounting department, local unit controllers, Global Business Services (GBS), Infosys etc. to ensure a healthy financial position.

Further, you develop and implement guidelines, in consultation with all SMU accounting managers and other specialists in the business area, to set minimum requirements for a qualitative balance sheet. You also establish the accounting agenda for the respective reporting entities and follow-up on open accounting issues with the local reporting units, monitoring the correct and timely solution of issues.

In addition you take the lead in representing the business area in user panels and work with local reporting units to ensure compliance with internal accounting standards, local statutory and fiscal requirements. You are also the focal point for discussions with external auditors in the respective region, and you manage the annual process to reconcile group reporting with local statutory reporting for the relevant reporting entities, ensuring analysis of statutory-group reporting differences.

On an ongoing basis you lead accounting related discussions, explaining business area wide policies and procedures, taking decisions, and defining service delivery expectations.

Job requirements/Candidate profile

To apply for this position you must possess the following attributes:
•  Master's degree in finance
• Accounting professional searching for an interesting second or third career role;
• Minimal five years of experience in accounting and reporting, preferably having worked in an audit firm or multinational company in a controlling/reporting role;
• HFM and SAP knowledge preferred, or actively willing to quickly learn the basics of systems;
• Flexible, proactive and hands on team player who is able to work in a complex organization and drive a continuous improvement agenda in the financial and transactional processes, and monthly closing and reporting processes;
• Willing and able to travel in the region (approx. 20% of the time);
• Good presentation and communication skills including excellent written and spoken English (must) and Dutch (pre).
