A highly responsible and influential role as a Lead Electrical Engineer within complex and cutting-edge projects for a leading global organization

Projects & Engineering (P&E) is AkzoNobel’s center of excellence in the field of project management and engineering. By delivering investment projects and optimizing current operations that secure AkzoNobel’s HSE&S and eco-efficiency performance we create business value for AkzoNobel and selected external customers. We offer an interesting work environment in which you work together with approximately 225 highly skilled technical professionals who work from our offices in Brazil, China, India, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Sweden, Thailand, UK and USA. At P&E you will have the opportunity to further develop your talents and skills and contribute  to continuously improve our organization and services.

Within this context, your mission is to perform and oversee the conceptual design, develop cost estimates and be responsible for the optimization/modification of new and existing electrical installations and systems. In doing so you ensure high quality in basic and detailed design in order to guarantee that electrical installations and systems operate with the required reliability, quality, safety, maintainability, sustainability and cost efficiency levels. You also participate in the commissioning and start-up of electrical installations and systems.

Is this a challenge that matches your skills and ambitions? Do you have a powerful knowledge of design for electrical industrial installations, and experience of designing high voltage electrical infrastructures? Can you demonstrate practical engineering knowledge and skills, along with familiarity of relevant techniques, tools, materials, devices and systems? Are you a critical and analytical thinker who can identify possibilities for improvement? Above all, are you a cooperative team worker, eager to develop your career within our dynamic, multinational and multicultural business environment?

If you offer all this and more, we invite you to apply for the position of

Lead Electrical Engineer

The role and its responsibilities
This role is based  in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, from where you participate in large projects and/or lead (sub) projects driven by the P&E organization. You will also be leading projects within your own area of expertise. Furthermore, you will coach and support the development of less experienced colleagues.

Based on customer demands you define the project scope and lead the decision-making process, managing the uncertainties and expectations of all stakeholders. This includes preparing and setting the project timetable and performing the cost estimation of equipment, engineering, construction and start-up.

Further, you perform design engineering including technical calculations, the sizing and designing of electrical equipment, and the definition of functional specifications. This can include electrical installations and systems within complex and hazardous production processes (chemicals and unit operations).

In addition, you manage the technical (bid) evaluation of quotations and support sourcing in contract conditions and negotiations. You also manage, monitor and optimize sourcing and you are responsible for documenting activities, including to the customer.

You will also apply AkzoNobel HSE  guidelines, site infrastructure regulatory requirements and internal/international standards within your design.

At all times you seek to identify, initiate, formulate and implement opportunities for improvement, i.e. improvement of design processes, manuals and guidelines (way of engineering) and improvements on electrical installations and systems. You also ensure efficient and effective communication and information exchange among the project team members, while sharing knowledge and coaching other employees.

As such, this is a role for a result oriented and proactive problem solver who can define and analyze problems, interpret information, transfer concepts, integrate disciplines, think conceptually and evaluate alternatives.

You should have the potential to take more responsibility and move up to a higher level within AkzoNobel over the next few years. In doing so, you will act as an expert consultant and focal point, establishing a strong and trustful relationship and network with customers who will consult you as someone able to provide solutions for complex problems.
