The Section Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the TS&d organization in India. This covers multiple application segments each within a matrix business organization. It is the responsibility of the Section Manager to coordinate the resources respect to setting targets, work planning, prioritization, reporting as well as introducing new techniques based on the business strategy and customer needs. Requests for TS&d services can come from a variety of different stakeholders in the EMEIA region and it is the responsibility of Section Manager to prioritize tasks, set deadlines and keep within budget.
The Section Manager is responsible for maintaining the Mumbai laboratories and instruments in a safe and compliant way. Adherence to chemical storage codes and maintaining current inventory of chemicals is the responsibility of the Section Manager with support from the Surface Chemistry HSE manager.
As a team of experts in surface chemistry applications, the TS&d group is often called upon to answer very specific and complex application questions that can be patent and trade secret specific or related to quality, health, safety and environmental issues. As experts, the group has the responsibility to collect and share knowledge that can be used to defend patent positions or challenge or support a customer complaint or request about product quality and performance. This is typically done as a member of a larger team consisting of other RDI applications and business functions.
The Mumbai TS&d group is one of a network of TS&d groups in Surface Chemistry and ultimately part the larger RDI Speciality Chemicals community of AkzoNobel. As the Section Manager of the Mumbai location, it is expected that a general understanding of the capabilities of other locations is maintained and a network is developed and utilized to improve the capabilities of the Mumbai group. Creating and fostering a mentality of 'center of expertise' within the group in Mumbai is part of this role. This includes keeping up with current techniques needed to support the business goals of the region.
Coaching, developing and attracting individuals as chemists and scientists is an important responsibility of the Section Manager. The Section Manager must identify the needs of the business and train the group and individuals to ensure the knowledge base is strong and a back-up structure is in place.
The Section Manager is responsible for carrying out performance reviews including individual development discussions and clarifying the link between performance and rewards to direct reports.
As a contributing member of the TS&d team, the Section Manager is expected to run standard and non-standard formulation work in the laboratory to support the overall business needs.

- PhD in chemistry and +5-7 years’ experience.

- Expert or familiar with various surfactant and polymer applications especially in Agricultural, Cleaning, Asphalt and Personal Care segments.

- Expert practical lab skills.

- Expert in various viscosity and rheology techniques.

- Excellent leadership skills.

- Direct manager experience.

- Commercial experience is beneficial.
