AkzoNobel Wood Coatings –has an outstanding opportunity for an Area Sales Manager covering the Midwest Region. The primary responsibilities include managing a sales team to achieve agreed sales revenue and margin targets. In addition, contributes through cost control to the profit of the unit. Allocates the customer responsibilities within the team and decides the sales activity to generate the agreed sales, sales support levels and customer satisfaction. The candidate must be willing to travel throughout territory, typically upwards of 50% with local and some overnight stays.

This is a remote position with the ideal candidate being based out of Minnesota, Iowa or Wisconsin. 

Key Objectives of the Job: 
• Plan, coordinate and direct sales activities. 
• Train personnel and assign territories. 
• Direct campaigns to increase market potential and establish product line acceptance. 
• Guide sales representatives in securing profitable accounts. 
• Coordinate assistance from technical services and marketing. 
• Monitor quotations, installations, warranty service, and sales terms and delivery commitments to ensure conformance with marketing policies. 
• Review major account warranties, claims and complaints. Expedite services to assure customer satisfaction. 
• Hold meetings to motivate and apprise sales staff of new products and promotions. 
• Provide input and assistance with promotion and advertising programs and development of products, services and policies. 
• Review orders, activity reports, expense accounts, area assignments, competitive activities, etc. 
• Recommend hiring/terminating, sales techniques, policies and similar matters.

Responsibilities: 
• Directs all field sales and sales support (i.e. Technical Service Representatives and Sales Coordinator) within the limits of corporate and operation sales department policies, to achieve assigned sales and profit objectives.
• Develop sales, profit and department budget forecasts, yearly and as needed by corporate management.
• This position will manage Technical Service Representatives and Technical Sales Representatives. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring planning, assigning, directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems.
• Formulates and recommends policies and objectives to insure the most effective operation of field sales activities. Sees that approved policies and objectives are fully understood by all personnel under his/her direction.
• Supervises the development of estimates of sales by the field force; reviews and approves forecasts of sales by the field force.
• Directs the reporting of and appraises the results of each authorized sales program against planned objectives and takes appropriate action.
• Directs the constant appraisal of pricing, distribution, and other policies and procedures of the operation; recommends such changes as would improve effectiveness in obtaining the objectives of the operation.
• Sees that all orders and other customer communications are promptly and accurately handled. Insures appropriate action on customer service problems.
• Is responsible for the development and on-going maintenance of an effective sales/service force through training and recruitment with the agreed upon budgetary parameters.
• Works in close harmony with lab and production to achieve planned sales and profit objectives of the operation.
• Insures the establishment and maintenance of adequate sales training programs.
• Establishes and maintains top level contact with the management of existing and potential customers.
• Analyzes and approves all expense budgets for field sales personnel. Analyzes and approves all expense accounts for field sales/service personnel.

Job requirements/Candidate profile

• Bachelor’s degree plus 10 years minimum coatings sales experience; minimum 5 years working for a furniture/building products related manufacturer. High school diploma plus 10 years of relevant work experience will be considered in lieu of a bachelor’s degree.
• Strong knowledge of wood coatings and wood finishes is required; Building Products experience is strongly preferred. General understanding of coatings, formulations, etc.
• Prior experience in a regional sales manager role leading a sales team is a plus. 
• Prior project management experience preferred.
• Prior success meeting and or/exceeding assigned sales goals.
• Ability to travel 50% which includes day trips (driving) and some overnight stays.
• Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
• Excellent verbal, written, presentation and interpersonal communication skills. 
• Must be self-motivated, have strong organizational skills and high standards for performance and integrity.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. 
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint
• Occasional lifting of 50-70 pounds; possess physical dexterity to perform job.
