One of our Specialty Chemical manufacturing sites in Axis, AL has an outstanding opportunity for a passionate, experienced professional to assume the role of Site Director.
This job is the top level position at the LeMoyne Manufacturing site responsible for SBU Sulfur Derivatives and SBU MCA North American Region production facilities and Solutia’s North American Crystex Production unit.  The manufacturing site provides 100% of production capacity for SBU SD products including sulfuric acid, carbon disulfide, sodium hydrosulfide and sulfur chlorides and monochloroacectic acid for SBU MCA.  Site production units are large, high hazard, complex continuous operating units that are heavily regulated under virtually all US HSE&S standards.
This position is responsible for the safe, effective, and efficient operation of the LeMoyne multisite for both long and short term considerations by managing the assets and planning, organizing, leading and controlling the activities of the staff; and interacting with the community, union, business and governmental leaders. Incumbent directs, plans and manages activities as well as human and material resources at the Lemoyne Site in the areas of Production, Engineering, Maintenance, Logistics, Quality, HSE, Processes  and  Projects, in order to maximize overall productivity, following AkzoNobel’s internal regulations and abiding by the laws that regulate the activity.  Is a key member of the regional business team and jointly responsible with marketing and sales to achieve financial targets for the region’s business objectives.

Principal Accountabilities:
- Prepares and after approval, controls investments plans for production, infrastructure and utilities.
- Manages the activities of the site to ensure customer satisfaction by controlling product quantity available, product quality, and controlling cost to offer the Marketing Department a low cost, high quality product, and by making direct presentations to customers.
- Manages the resources and site activities to insure that appropriate safety, health, environment and security standards are established, consistent with AkzoNobel policies and CSR. Responsible signatory authority for site regulatory compliance to US HSE regulations including OSHA Process Safety, US EPA Risk Management, licenses to operate including (Title V Air Permit, NPDES Water Discharge permit, RCRA solid waste/groundwater protection permit)
- Represents (primary contact and spokesperson) the Company to all media, community, regulatory agencies, elected officials, and regional business interests. Actively participates to enhance the image of the Company and industry by interaction with the community, its business and regional governmental leaders.
- Manages interactions and maintains adherence to memorandums of agreement (MOA’s) for multisite operations with other BU’s (Industrial Chemicals) and external companies (Flexsys/Solutia) that have assets and operations present at the LeMoyne site.
- Manages the various departments to achieve the career development of employees, maintains excellent labor relations, achieve equitable salary and wage levels (including negotiation of the labor union contract agreement for the site).
- Manages the financial performance of the site consistent with the Company’s plan by establishing overall budget goals for capital and overhead expenses.
- Advises in the decision processes and implementation of remedial actions for major Superfund/RCRA decisions for the LeMoyne site (potential site environmental liabilities estimated at $ 100 mln USD).
Functional Responsibilities/Network:
- Authorizes spending consistent with AkzoNobel and Sulfur Derivatives policies.
- Manages implementation of new projects, products and processes in support of Corporate, BU, SBU and Country strategies including responsible for the execution and realization of investment projects (after approval).
- Ensures the effective and efficient operations of the site services and supplies, if applicable, other users with a clear insight in cost structure.
- Manages the relationship with the Union for reaching Local agreements, with the objective to obtain people flexibility and commitment.
- Creates optimal conditions for the functions and personnel reporting to him and ensures that the location has a clear organizational, reporting and communication structure which makes optimal use of available know-how.
- Maintains, within general guidelines, an effective HR policy within the manufacturing function and stimulates his personnel by providing good communication and fostering team spirit. Leads management development for all people in the manufacturing function. Recognizes people’s capacities and desires, notifies HR, and seeks to promote opportunities for his people inside the sBU and in other AkzoNobel entities and ensure equitable salary and wage levels.
- Represents the interests of his sBU and builds and maintains effective contacts with neighbors, local authorities and organizations and institutes that are important for his sBU.
- Ensures a positive attitude and continues learning in TQ principles and promotes “and/and” thinking.
- Contributes to the preparation of the Manufacturing policy, especially production, maintenance, logistics, organization and safety and environmental issues.
- Introduces and supervises good manufacturing practice in quality, safety, environment, raw material yields and maintenance practice.
- Delivers a sustained effort in an effective and efficient use of production capacity and process technology, so meeting market needs, quality and logistic targets, and cost and HSE standards.
- Optimizes production- and utility processes and equipment to reach and improve product quality, HSE standards and costs targets.
- Proposes improvement programs for productions processes.
- Maintains and develops expertise and know-how to control operations, by supervision on the site organization and filling the vital functions by personnel selection, staffing and training.

Job requirements/Candidate profile

- BS/MS/PhD in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering or Production/Operations Management
- 10 – 15 years’ experience managing a high hazardous chemical manufacturing environment and site required
- Must be organized and proficient in project as well as people management
- Experienced in all areas of HSE&S regulations and management systems, including people, safety, behavioral based safety, engineering, project and equipment management and asset integrity
- Experience working with labor unions required
- Experience leading operational changes (MOC) and ability to analyze daily production metrics (KPI's) and plant reports.

- Excellent communication and ability to work with all levels in an organization

- Demonstrates strong leadership skills

- Experience working in a continuous improvement environment preferred
