Responsibility

The chemist will be responsible for leading the technical efforts of various projects for the global polymer research and innovation team.  The individual will contribute ideas, design and set up experiments, synthesize resins, test coatings, direct the work of others, and report results/findings back to project manager(s).  The job will be dynamic in nature and the chemist must be able to manage multiple projects/workloads simultaneously.  The chemist will also assist in handing off resin formulas to pilot and production facilities, often attending when initial batches are made.  Finally, work will be conducted in an organized manner and will be reported via formal written summaries, reports, and presentations to colleagues within the organization.

Key Objectives/Principal Accountabilities

• Design, calculate, and synthesize innovative resins including but not limited to modification and dispersion of thermoplastics.
• Perform analytical tests including acid value and hydroxyl value titrations and submit samples to the analytical laboratory for testing/characterization; interpret analytical results.
• Design screening experiments to determine the utility of innovative resins and crosslinking chemistries in meeting customer needs for Metal Coatings and other Performance Coatings SMUs.
• Supervise and evaluate the work of junior chemists.
• Work with internal regulatory experts and shipping/receiving to bring in and send out samples globally, satisfying all regulatory requirements.
• Contribute to the day-to-day functioning of the extruder laboratory through, for example, the ordering of supplies and ongoing maintenance of the chemical inventory, as well as maintaining the operability of the extruder asset.
• Collaborate with regional laboratories and other departments as required.
• Write concise reports recording the work carried out.

Performance Coatings RD&I supports the Technology Roadmap for the 7 SMUs in Performance Coatings with overall revenues of > 5 million euros. Responsible to create step change technology to drive organic growth of all SMUs.

Functional Responsibilities/Network (kindly limit to a maximum of five)
• Liaise with Project Managers in Metal Coatings Packaging NPD in US and Europe
• Connect with expertise in extrusion in Felling and Deventer for scale up
• Oversee users of extruder facility; advise and consult on all extruder projects

Job requirements/Candidate profile

• Designs, executes, and interprets experiments according to the principles of the scientific method with knowledge of Design of Experiments and Applied Statistical Methods being a bonus.
• Possesses good problem solving and critical thinking skills.
• Exhibits good interpersonal skills.
• Possesses the ability to lead chemists and cross-functional teams.
• Has experience running laboratory projects, reviewing progress, evaluating results, recommending changes, and suggesting future work.
• Communicates effectively including writing concise yet complete technical reports and delivering informative presentations.
• Works in a safe manner following safety rules and standard operating procedures.
• Learns continually through direct experience and formal training, keeping current on relevant scientific advancements.
• Keeps a clean, organized laboratory work area with familiarity with 5S principles being a plus.
• Is knowledgeable about polymer structure/property relationships, with hands on extruder experience and managing an extruder asset an ideal skill set.
• Holds one or more of the following:
o PhD in polymer science, polymer chemistry, or polymer engineering
o Master of science in polymer science/chemistry/engineering with five years of experience
o Bachelor of science in polymer science/chemistry/engineering with seven years of experience
