Purpose/Key Objective of the Position:

A Chemist in the Research and Development (R&D) laboratory is responsible for coatings’ technology sold into the coil marketplace which can include architectural aluminum; metal building; appliance, HVAC, steel door and transportation markets, among others. As a Chemist in R&D, you will be responsible to complete assigned projects with minimal supervision while promoting a safe work environment.
A Chemist may conduct research, develop, analyze, maintain and improve existing and future products. An R&D Chemist may have heavy interaction with site manufacturing and/or sales and marketing support functions. Regardless of assignment, a Chemist will select appropriate procedures and materials, with limited guidance, for performing their assigned tasks related to Product Maintenance and Product Development work associated with Laboratory Work Requests; day-to-day problem solving; and/or Formula and Process Management.

This is a continuing developmental level position. A high degree of personal initiative demonstrated by, among other things, a drive to understand the underlying “cause and effect” relationships within the context of formulating finished products is essential. This understanding will develop and enhance the Chemist’s skills necessary for evaluations, developments, and problem-solving.

Key Responsibilities:

• Ability to handle Product Developments, maintenance of current products and Raw Material Evaluations with little direct supervision.
• Capable of Small Scale Production and ability to learn the principles of Production
• Ability to handle increased amounts of unsupervised interaction with: Customers, Sales, Quality Control, Production, and/or Suppliers.
• Responsible for the completion of specific project assignments which would normally involve segments of major project objectives.
• Provide technical assistance and support to Production, Sales, and Marketing, as required for product scale-up, quality control, application testing, and other cross functional activities.
• Maintain detailed technical records, as required.
• Promote safety and environmental regulations by ensuring that standards, policies, and procedures are adhered to in compliance with corporate, federal, state, and local requirements.
• Ability to attend line runs to monitor product application.
• Perform additional duties as required.

Job requirements/Candidate profile

• Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry and/or Coatings or Polymer Science preferred.
• Bachelor's Degree in Physical Sciences accepted.
• Or at least 10 years’ experience in coatings industry in lieu of degree.
• Must demonstrate basic formulating knowledge in coatings.
• Must demonstrate proficiency in basic algebra and mathematics.
• Must demonstrate ability to communicate well in both written and spoken English.
• Must be willing to continue education and learning.
• A minimum of one year’s experience that demonstrates an aptitude for the duties and responsibilities associated with the position of a Chemist.
• Familiarity with 5S and Six Sigma methodologies preferred.
• Proficiency in MS Office Applications.
