With limited supervision, position is responsible for managing R&D personnel and projects which are primarily aimed at the development and commercialization of new products and technologies for the U.S. business as well as the worldwide business, as applicable. He/she is actively engaged in the introduction of new products to customers and supports the manufacture of these products.
Position must constructively interact with all other U.S. and worldwide personnel to facilitate a well-run organization.

· Organize and manage the assigned resources

· Define and implement lab R&D programs designed to maintain and grow the business. Work effectively with marketing, sales, and production to achieve business goals

· Organize and manage the ongoing support (production/customer) for the existing product portfolio. Work effectively with marketing, sales, technical service and production to achieve business goals.

· Provides immediate, active direct support for production and customer problems, in order to rapidly identify root cause and implement permanent corrective action.

· Coordinate lab-wide activities concerning personnel management, raw material rationalization and control and synergy with manufacturing.

· Effective interface with other AkzoNobel technical employees in other worldwide laboratories.

· Represent AkzoNobel as a technology leader to colleagues, customers, suppliers, and the coatings industry.

· Attends customer business reviews and visits customer facilities to supervise trial runs of new products, trouble-shoot products on line, and to make formal presentations to customers.

· Identifies Akzo Nobel Intellectual Property and takes action to protect it.

· Develops and implements a training program for US and SBU technical and non-technical personnel.

· Implement strategic plans to meet overall lab goals regarding safety, 5S, ISO 9000, product and formula rationalization, and development of laboratory staff.

· Promotes the quality system through adhering to the elements of and being familiar with the philosophy, quality statement, quality manual, and procedures.

· Attend and participate in Powder Plant Programs/Committees/Training as required, such as Department Safety, Plant Safety, Behavioural Safety, Housekeeping Audit Teams, ISO, Life Saving Rules or any other safety programs.

· Participate in the Powder Safety Journey. Adhere to the Golden Principle which is Simply to intervene to stop work if conditions or behaviour are unsafe.

· Promotes health, safety and environmental regulations by ensuring that standards, policies, and procedures are adhered to in compliance with corporate, federal, state, and local requirements.

Job requirements/Candidate profile

• Advanced degree (M.S. and/or Ph.D.) in chemistry, chemical engineering or polymer science; or a B.S. science degree with 10 or more years experience in coatings science and technology; or 20 years experience in powder coatings at similar level
• Very good understanding of powder coatings chemistries and raw materials, powder application, and powder manufacturing.
• Must have a good understanding of the US (preferably global) powder coatings market.
• Experience working in other Functional areas (within powder) or other AkzoNobel BUs.
• Experience working within multi-cultural and international environment
• Must have the ability to effectively organize and execute technical programs with a potentially high degree of complexity or unknowns to a successful conclusion.
• Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects and/or multiple tasks efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced environment.
• Must have very good oral and written communication skills and must be able to effectively present information to colleagues, customers, and suppliers. This includes formal presentations.
• Must be computer literate in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
• Must have the ability to complete requests in a timely manner
• Ability to take technical request and translate to technical projects.
