Purpose of the Job
The role of a Field Performance Technical Specialist is to focus on further improving and advancing the understanding of customer end use conditions, processes and challenges in the field, and, transferring that understanding into R&D product technology development, test method development and existing product improvement.
This role is a senior position and deemed critical in terms of better understanding of the real world conditions in which our customers and products have to operate with the view of getting closer to it and focusing on key issues and improvements.
The successful candidate will be someone with relevant experience within the Protective/Marine coatings industry, particularly in the areas of coatings application project management, inspection and quality control. There is an absolute need for excellent communication skills, excellent project planning skills and self-motivation to see projects through to completion.
This is a part laboratory, part field based role with a high level of interaction with internal R&D Chemists, Project Teams and Marketing, along with a wide range of external customer types.
Role Responsibilities
•           Responsible for the delivery of assigned projects and support activity. Key areas for focus within this specific role are (but not limited to):-
Ø  Build a comprehensive understanding of customer end-use conditions into which different coatings and coating schemes may be placed.  Conditions include but may not be limited to; substrate, structure design, production/construction process, environment and lifetime expectancy.                                         
Ø  Track, inspect, gather information and build a track record of the performance of our coatings in the various end-use conditions     
Ø  Develop a global system to capture, store and disseminate all field performance test data. Use the information and data to provide field testing support to research, development and product support projects.           
Ø  Carry out research and development in the area of relevant trial field testing, application techniques, inspection techniques and laboratory test method development.
Ø  Characterization of performance of existing and target products and schemes
Ø  Contribution to customer technical queries
Ø  Improved understanding of coating modes of failure and root cause.
Ø  Continuous improvement of technical control and robustness of coating specifications.
Ø  Educating and training R&D product development and support chemists.
Ø  Identify and exploit all opportunities for technical innovation.
Ø  Demonstrate commitment and responsibility to integrity and ethics.
Ø  Undertake additional activities as required within the scope of the role.
Customer Interactions:
•           Communicate effectively with team members, other stakeholders and 3rd parties in line with company policy relating to confidentiality and code of conduct
•           Understand and manage range of internal customer needs
•           Communicate effectively with both internal and external audiences (including customer interactions)
Team Work:
•           Communicate effectively with team members on items of process, policy etc. e.g. working conditions
•           Communicate effectively with peers in the areas of product support and product development (throughout the whole RD&I community)
•           Participate in the selection and induction of new starters (as appropriate)
•           Act as a consultant within areas of expertise for inexperienced chemists.
•           Act as a role model
Quality & HSE:
•           Understand and apply AkzoNobel, site and RD&I health & safety policies and rules at all times, including other AkzoNobel, supplier and customer sites
•           Follow appropriate processes and maintain technical records to a high standard, meeting local quality standards
•           Identify, report and implement areas for improvement in all aspects of technical activity
