Available Opportunities
We currently have multiple Industrial Placement opportunities available within
RD&I to start in July and September 2017. The industrial placements are spread over different areas; Yacht, Fire Protection, Polymer Research Development, Paint & Resin Functional Surfaces and Protective Coatings Development. Applicants will be considered for all of these roles.
These positions will be based at the various laboratories in Felling, Gateshead. The roles will involve either screening new coatings technologies, developing concepts that may be applicable to future Protective Coatings products, validating new in-lab test methods, characterisation techniques and bioassays or visualising, analysing and modelling performance data. It is envisaged that a variety of technologies will be evaluated by each of the successful applicants and the focus will be on both short term and longer term product requirements.
The positions are predominantly laboratory based and candidates must be highly enthusiastic about practical laboratory work and research. It is envisaged that the successful candidates will contribute with ideas to progress their projects and effectively organize their workload. A portion of time will also be spent writing up results and analyzing data in order to determine next steps. You will work under the guidance of a line manager, and will be trained in all aspects of working safely in the laboratory using established test methods.
To be considered for this industrial placement, you must be a high achiever expecting to attain a minimum 2:1 degree or equivalent* on a course that offers you the option of taking a Year in Industry.  Your degree subject area should be either Chemistry or a related discipline, marine biology or a related discipline or data science/computer science or similar.
You must also have achieved a minimum 300 UCAS points or equivalent** as well as speak fluent English.
It goes without saying that you’ll be a highly motivated undergraduate who is keen to contribute to the progress of engaging projects within our operation. You should have some previous experience of laboratory work with the ability to work accurately, tidily, methodically and safely, conducting yourself in a professional manner, adhering to AkzoNobel policies on health and safety, COSHH, quality standards and confidentiality.
What makes you different is you are the sort of undergraduate who not only has ideas but also has the energy and determination to make them happen; an undergraduate who wants to work in an international environment and find solutions to the big challenges facing the world.
Two of the positions we have available have slightly different requirements:
One of the positions available is for a Data Scientist, and the successful candidate should have a good working knowledge of R and/or Python (or other statistical programming language), data visualisation techniques and tools and should be resourceful in manipulating, appending and cleaning datasets.
Another of the positions available is within Marine Biology and the successful candidate should have knowledge of (marine) biology or microbiology, ecology, environmental science, forensic biology or science, or similar. They should also have experience in detailed processing of biological samples by a variety of analytical methods such as, but not limited to, microscopy, HPLC, DNA extraction. Finally, they should have an understanding of experimental design and statistics combined with experience in a lab and/or environmental marine or microbial studies and willingness to work in-field at marinas, marine lab, etc.

So if you think you’ve got what it takes and want to develop your talents, we can’t wait to see you here at AkzoNobel – and help you take your ideas to the world.
Applications for this position will close on 31st December 2016.
The first stage of the process is a telephone interview, followed by online testing and an assessment centre which will be held in February.
