One of our Specialty Chemical business units, Pulp and Performance Chemicals (PPC) has an outstanding opportunity for a passionate, experienced professional to assume the role of Process Safety Management (PSM) Specialist.  This position will support 8 sites in North America for the Business Unit. The candidate will lead line management to deliver HSE policy, set the safety culture and manage hazards. They will act as a role model for compliance and commitment and contribute to the HSE strategy.
This position can be located at any of the PPC sites: Columbus, Marietta, Augusta or Valleyfield in Canada. The incumbent will travel approximately 40%-50% both domestically and internationally to other manufacturing sites.

We work with industrial customers all over the world who count on our trusted and reliable brands, such as Eka, Expancel, Kromasil and Levasil Colloidal Silica.
Position Responsibilities:
1. Processes – Build line management understanding of safety processes (50%)
Tasks: Be an influential advisor to line management by building and fostering a deep understanding of the theoretical concepts, industry standards and best practices in one or more AkzoNobel safety Core Processes (people/process safety) and/or sub-processes (for example: behavior based safety, industrial hygiene, hazard study, asset integrity, environmental management and distribution safety) as they are relevant to the BU.
Results: Safety process knowledge of [Business/Location/Unit] management meets company expectation

2. Capability: Leverage HSE expertise to support own unit and others (20%)
Tasks: Be an effective coach for the BU by leveraging and extending its HSE knowledge through personal participation in AkzoNobel expert pools for delivery of the Safety Common Platform, HSE Faculty learning programs, auditing and/or incident investigation and/or through training activities within the [Business/Location/Unit] as well as through personal functional development.
Results: HSE capability of BU management meets company expectation

3. Delivery: Guide line management to deliver HSE policy, set the culture and manage hazards (10%)
Tasks: Guide line management to develop and ensure implementation of HSE policies, plans and practices for the [Business/Location/Unit] in line with the AkzoNobel HSE Policy, Directives, Rules & Procedures and in compliance with relevant regulatory requirements; together with and in support of line management, set the safety culture and manage hazards.
Results : Established HSE management system 

4. Improvement: Act as a role model for compliance and commitment (10%)
Tasks: Spend time engaging with employees and act as a role model for ensuring compliance with and commitment to the AkzoNobel HSE Policy, Directives, Rules & Procedures, including its risk tolerance criteria.
Results: Progress towards leading level of HSE maturity

5. Strategy: Contribute to the HSE strategy beyond own unit (10%)
Tasks: Contribute to the development of the HSE strategy for design, deployment and delivery of the AkzoNobel HSE Policy, Directives, Rules & Procedures and Safety Common Platform for the entity at the next higher level, in order to ensure alignment of objectives and performance of the BU.

- Additional Job Responsibilities:
Support all PPC site with all PSM aspects by- Insuring that all 21 building blocks from the PSM framework are followed by sites
- Lead, conduct and train the sites in Hazop studies (PHA, LOPA etc…) and insure all the processes are covered by them
- Insure PHA Pro tool is correctly used and known locally by the sites
- Insure Life Critical process safety procedures (i.e PTW,moc etc…) are in place and used in BU standard way
- In co-operation with the technology group Provide proceed with “product stream” standardization of all PSM procedure (i.e critical equipment)
- Check and validate that pre-startup safety review, shutdowns and start-ups are done in standard way in the whole BU

- Lead and participate to PSM incidents investigation and insure learning is distributed and discussed at sites
- In co-operation with Maintenance Coordinator PPC, insure maintenance inspections, plans and procedure are consistent through the whole BU
- Be part of the PSM expert pool
- Make sure that the PSM reporting is done in time and in quality through the EPM system
- Identify the sites deviating from the PSM plan of achieving the common platform targets. Analyze the gaps, agree on correction plans and support them by:- providing adapted trainings, advices and support
- acting as internal consultant, formulating possible solutions
- conducting risks assessments and other investigations like root cause analyses

- Ensure that each accident/incident (12.5 and others) are reported in time and in quality following AN rules ( BU emergency Response procedure )
- Establish and maintain a solid best practice platform between the HSE/PSM business partners through networking
- Report all HSE gaps to the HSE director. Make an analyse of these gaps and establish the right plan to close them in collaboration with the HSE/PSM business partner
- Make sure that all the AN directives, rules and procedures are well known and understood by the sites.
- All accidents, incidents and near-misses are reported in the IRS,Airsweb tools are shared through the HSE alerts.
The position reports directly to the BU PPC HSE Director. This position is an individual contributor but must have strong influencing skills.

Job requirements/Candidate profile

- Bachelor, masters or doctorate degree in HSE or Engineering or related discipline or equivalent by experience
- Minimum 5 years experience in HSE with 2-3 years PSM experience
- Trained in Hazard Studies
- Strong strategic and conceptual skills with ability to execute and follow through
- Positive influencing: ability to convince others, gain agreement or acceptance of plans activities and ability to move others willingly towards a desired goal or course of action
- Ability to drive continuous improvement of the processes, policies, standards
- Able to work in an inclusive way in the HSE community to make sure the business experiences ‘one voice’ and the teams collective objectives are met
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, entrepreneurship, result oriented, negotiation, problem solving, project management, business acumen
- Very good verbal and written English language skills
- Relevant experience in different multiple units, disciplines, locations and/or other companies
- Strong experience with Hazard Studies and use of PHA Pro
Physical Requirements: Must be able to access any are of the facility intended for personnel presence.  The work environment requires walking, inspecting, climbing in an industrial setting with outside weather conditions.
