One of our Specialty Chemical Business Units, Pulp and Performance Chemicals has an outstanding opportunity for a passionate, experienced professional to assume the role of Laboratory Coordinator. This position will be located in Duluth, Georgia.
More than half of AkzoNobel Pulp and Performance Chemicals’ sales derive from chemicals and customized solutions for bleaching pulp. We’re the largest producer of sodium chlorate worldwide, and one of the largest suppliers of hydrogen peroxide. Our bleaching chemicals and concepts are marketed under the Eka brand, generally associated with global presence, sustainable products and solutions, reliable business partnerships, and assured quality throughout the value chain.
This position will have the following responsibilities:
- Manage the applications laboratory to have desired functionality and still fulfills all legal and company requirements. 20 %
- Conduct laboratory bleaching simulations to support customer use of bleaching chemicals and AkzoNobel business. 25 %
- Participate in pulp mill scale implementation, evaluation and optimization of bleaching chemical use to support short and long term sales of bleaching chemicals. 25 %
- Digest and report results from laboratory studies and mill trials in written and oral form. 20 % 
- Manage safety issues in the laboratory and contribute to safe use of our products at customer sites. 10 %
The position reports to the Technical Marketing Manager and is an individual contributor.
It is the responsibility of the Application Lab Coordinator to:
- Conduct laboratory pulp bleaching studies, process and digest the results and make available for the organization for use in sales support.
- Manage and look after the laboratory, its equipment and chemicals so that regulatory and internal company requirements are met but still efficient working conditions can be achieved.
- To make sure tasks in the laboratory are carried out with accuracy and to procedures so that results can be trusted and used for the purpose they were intended. 
- As part of on-site bleaching service support contribute with necessary laboratory equipment, analytical service, data to contribute to final report and presentation. 
- Prepare and manage the cost budget for the laboratory.
- Provides customer assistance for the safe and effective use of AkzoNobel PPC products and technology.

Job requirements/Candidate profile

- Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or related field.
- Prior laboratory experience is required (5 years minimum).
- The position requires a person with practical skills that is able to carry out in house laboratory studies and adapt to new situations in field trials.
- Must have the ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.
- Well organized and self-driven to be able to cover several ongoing activities over time in a location different from the rest of the team.
- Well versed in (statistical) data analyses and the use of MS Excel and other software. 
- Up to date on US safety regulation with ambition to be a leader in safety.
- A person that is a team player and finds it easy and necessary to co-operate with colleagues and customers.
- Experience from the pulp and paper industry is a benefit.
- Ability to travel up to 50 % of the time.  
Physical Requirements: This job requires capability to work in a laboratory setting with hazardous chemicals. The incumbent must be able to climb multiple levels, work in/outdoors, various noise environments, and lift up to 50 lbs.  The work environment requires walking, inspecting, and bending in an industrial setting.
