Purpose Statement
The chemist is an important member of the Polymer and Coatings Analysis Group, characterizing the intrinsic chemical properties of raw materials and coatings formulations. The role in the P&CA group provides key analytical data to RD&I, Tech Service and Supply Chain to support new product development and existing products, process and raw material optimization, and resolution of customer complaints.
- Scientific and Technical: The incumbent will perform both standard and novel laboratory tests using appropriate analytical instruments and methods. This work includes pre and post-experiment calculations, as well as preparing detailed reports. Statistical analysis of data may be required.
- Relational: The incumbent will interface with the AkzoNobel technical community (chemists, formulators, engineers) and RD&I managers. Cross-discipline meetings will be attended as necessary.
- Safety: All safety policies will be observed during all laboratory duties. This includes, but is not limited to: wearing required PPE, disposing of all wastes as prescribed by policy, and ensuring all equipment is properly maintained. The incumbent will also participate in quarterly safety audits of the analytical group.
- Personal Development: The incumbent will make personal growth an important part of their activity. The willingness and desire to learn about analytical instrumentation and theory is paramount. This may take the form of in-house training, attending training courses, or professional society meetings. May be given special projects by the manager.

Job requirements/Candidate profile

- Qualifications/ Education:- BS in chemistry, engineering, materials science or polymer science

- Business and/or Functional Skills/ Knowledge: - The ability and desire to operate sophisticated analytical equipment
- Strong computer skills including proficiency in Office suite.
- The ability to trouble shoot and maintain instrumentation as needed.
- Hands on, mechanical skills are a plus.
- Excellent communication skills with an emphasis on written reports.
- Strong problem solving skills
- Strong organizational skills
- The ability to handle multiple priorities on tight time lines
- The ability to work independently, as well as part of a team
- Experience: Approximately 3-5 years of hands on experience in a laboratory setting; prefer skills in gas and/or liquid chromatography
