About AkzoNobel

AkzoNobel is a leading global paints and coatings company and a major producer of specialty chemicals, with leading market positions and brands in countries around the world. We operate in a number of important market segments ranging from buildings and infrastructure to transport, industrial and consumer goods. We’re also the sector leader in sustainability and are number one in the renowned Dow Jones Sustainability Index. In practical terms, that means our sustainable solutions are in your lives, and those of your friends and family, every day. We’re the people that make it possible for you to do what you need to do.

A global challenge for an automation expert with highly developed strategic and interpersonal skills

AkzoNobel’s Decorative Paints (DP) business area (BA) adds color to people’s lives with a full range of interior and exterior decoration and protection products for the professional and consumer markets. As authorities on color we aim to provide all our customers – from professional decorators to DIY enthusiasts – with a great color experience and a fantastic finish. Our range includes wall paints, lacquers and varnishes, as well as products for surface preparation (pre-deco products).

Advances in Digital technology and the opportunities presented by Industry 4.0 offer the potential to unlock significant benefits across DP’s manufacturing operations worldwide. To this end we have developed a Global Digital strategy that will further automate our processes and data flows to deliver greater transparency, reduce lead times, improve quality and increase efficiency.

Within this context, your mission in this key role is to strategize, deliver and coordinate this progam in line with the priorities of the BA Global Supply Chain (ISC) team. As such, this is a complex and multi-facing role that demands an ability to share and discuss your deep knowledge of automatization and engineering at a senior and strategic level with stakeholders at sites worldwide.
This involves the overall and detailed planning of priorities, resources, and estimates with business unit (BU) teams worldwide. You also align BU and site teams to implement the agreed BA Digital Strategy, instead of continuing with locally sourced options.

Is this a challenge that matches your profile as an outstanding project manager who can activate and drive the adoption of new technology in local markets/sites by involving and inspiring all stakeholders? Have you delivered on strategic priorities at a regional or global level by driving fact based business decisions? Do you have the technical knowledge necessary to improve processes and CI methodologies while sharing problem solving techniques and ideas? Above all, are you able to make a real difference within our fast moving, multinational and multicultural business environment?
If you offer all this and more we invite you to apply for the role of

Global Automation Manager

The role and its responsibilities
Ideally you will be based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, but it is also possible to work from Slough in the UK.

From here you establish a Digital & Automation (D&A) strategy for all manufacturing facilities across DP covering new-build systems and system upgrades/migrations. In doing so you ensure that each site has a clear automation strategy, and you establish a governance model to ensure that the global automation strategy is followed across DP.

Further, you define the model for development of future investments in Digital & Automation technology to ensure alignment with all productivity, material/energy efficiency and capacity generation KPIs.

Another central task is to work with the MES/MOM Systems Manager to ensure standardization within the MES/D&A process integration layer, and you establish a DP ISC Network in order to develop the required capabilities and expand expertise across the organization.

All of this requires you to act as a multi-facing focal point within DP for all aspects of Process Control and Safety Systems, working closely with the Corporate Advanced Manufacturing and Projects & Engineering (AMPE) group of the Integrated Supply Chain and the Manager Automation Technology. You also work together with DP’s ISC management team, local stakeholders and AMPE groups to prioritize investments in D&A.

You also work with AkzoNobel Sourcing and AMPE to establish a plan for hardware, software and functional standardization, and you create and deploy standards for batch execution and recipe management.

At all times you seek process optimization possibilities, ensure adherence to safety standards and directives, and perform assessments of D&A infrastructure and cyber security standards.

The primary KPIs against which you will be measured are ISC total cost productivity, and NPR cost savings.
