Responsibility

• Independently conceives, plans, and conducts research, which could have a considerable influence on scientific knowledge or technological developments. Usually performs as staff advisor/consultant relative to a scientific or technical specialty.
• Develops and evaluates plans and criteria for a variety of projects and activities to be carried out by others.
• Assesses the feasibility and soundness of proposed experimental approaches, techniques, or equipment when necessary data are insufficient or confirmation by testing is advisable.
• Proposes strategic R&D programs for chemistry and process.
• Regularly leads one or more Focus projects. As project leader, drives progress and reviews results of project team overall, as well as individual members.
• As an individual researcher, carries out complex or new assignments requiring the development of new or improved techniques and procedures.
• May be assisted by scientists or engineers, but the focus of this job is clearly technical rather than managerial.
• Consults regularly for manufacturing locations and Technology.

Job Context
The Surfactant business requires deep knowledge of surfactant synthesis and manufacturing processes on a global basis. The job context is to assimilate Surface Chemistry surfactant technology, develop new products and processes, and to improve existing ones. In this way a bridge of technical continuity is provided if more senior members of PPR gradually retire over the next few years.

Job requirements/Candidate profile

• Ph.D. in chemistry or chemical engineering with 8-15 years post graduate experience in Organic Synthesis
• Knowledge of surfactants principles and applications
• Knowledge of organic chemistry with emphasis on nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur derivatives
• Knowledge of analytical methods, especially nmr, ir, and gc/ms
• Knowledge of catalysis, especially transition metal catalysis
• Knowledge of unit operations for batch and continuous reactors
• Demonstrated creativity and work ethic
• Good mechanical and mathematical skills, including basic calculus and statistics
• Possesses a strong work ethic, self-starter, good oral and written communications skills, and proficient in Microsoft Office suite of programs, molecular drawing, and design of experiments (DOE)
• Possesses interpersonal skills suitable for customer interactions
