In the position of Principle Research Chemist at Akzo Nobel Surface Chemistry LLC the applicant will use an understanding of structure, property, and performance relationships of polymeric and surfactant systems to research molecular interaction, adhesion, adsorption, film formation, wetting, lubrication and interfacial phenomenon for the company's R&D activities. Use quantitative analyses, computational methods and statistical design to develop new intellectual property in distinct market segments including fuels and lubes, agro, oilfield and personal care. Develop, execute, and evaluate plans for long term research projects with emphasis on sustainability. Conduct experiments to create new fuel additives that will increase diesel fuel power output and improve lubricant injection in engines and to provide a better mechanistic understanding of rheological phenomena. Train members of the Global R&D organization and interface with both technical and business people within the business area and third-parties, including universities and customers, to solve complex problems.

Job requirements/Candidate profile

Master’s degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field and 3 years of experience in each of the following: material science specific to the field of phase behavior, shear and extensional rheology and analyzing fluid mechanics of complex fluids with emphasis on flow stability/instability for application in Fuels and Lubes markets; use, calibration, and interpretation of CaBER, Trimaster and Rayleigh Ohnesorge Jet Extensional Rheometer (“ROJER”); structure/property/flow/performance relationships of polymeric and surfactant systems for application in fuel and lubes markets; tribology including use, calibration, and interpretation of MTM instrument for the development of new friction reduction/lubricant additives; and quantitative analyses, computational methods and statistical design for the development of new products and intellectual property. Travel domestically and internationally to company and customer sites 15% of working time.
