One of our Specialty Chemical manufacturing sites in Houston, TX has an outstanding opportunity for a passionate, experienced professional to assume the role of Site Director. This job is the top level position at the Surface Chemistry Houston Manufacturing site. In this position you will support the company and Business Unit Surface Chemistry vision, mission, shared values, strategies and objectives through effective Plant Operations Management.

The main technologies at the Houston site: Anionic, Nonionic Surfactants.
Main Products: Amides, Imidazolines, Esters, Diepoxides, Acrylic Acid, Formaldehyde Resins, Phosphate Esters, Carboxylated Nonionics, Sulfosuccinates, Alkane Sulfonates, Alkoxylated Amines, Alcohols, Glycols, Polyols and Phenols,Sulfonates & Sulfates.

The Akzo Nobel Surface Chemistry business unit manufactures a complex product line of over 800 products and formulations for the Petroleum, Agricultural, Mining, Detergent, Personal Care, Industrial and Institutional Cleaning markets. Business has been primarily formulation driven and manufacturing expertise and service is critical to ensure value is delivered to the customer.

- Site HSE Manager (functional report to HSE)
Functional network: Lead the Site Management Team. Site representative of the business unit to service units (CI, SCM, HR, Legal, HSE and PSRA, Finance and Control) at the Houston site. Work closely with site HR business partners and site HSE manager to ensure safe and effective. Lead Quality Management System programs; e.g. ISO9001, RC14000. Alignment and sharing of best practice with other Site Managers within the region and on a global basis for the BU. 


Responsibilities:

- Communicates and promotes the approved BU-strategy and develops plans and budgets for plant and integrates these into Site mission, strategy and objectives. Recommends and upon approval implements policy regarding plant operations.
- Directs implementation of plans and attainment of process improvement including technical development. Lead/direct/engage planning, control, information management and reporting for the site. Identifies and analyzes changing business conditions and production performance and undertakes timely corrective action to optimize performance. Ensures an environment and culture of continuous improvement and leads improvement process.
- Ensures effective use of production capacity and continued productivity increases while meeting requirements for quality, cost control, safety and environment. Assures the responsible use of physical plants and production capacity. Ensures that products meet requirements of safety, health and environment in transportation and use. 
- Responsible as business owner for safe, on plan and schedule execution of capital projects on the site.
- Fulfill the responsibilities of the Site Operating Manager with reference to AkzoNobel HSE&S Manual. Ensures site operation is aligned with OSHA PSM requirements.
- Creates optimal conditions for the functions and personnel directed. Designs and implements a clear organization, reporting and communication structure that makes optimal use of available Human Resources.
- With Human resource function and functional leaders, sets challenging but achievable targets and objectives for plant personnel in line with business objectives. Manage performance routinely utilizing Akzo Nobel performance dialog system and more routine follow up with leading indicators. Keep employee engagement at high level and represent Akzo Nobel core values.
- Represents the Surface Chemistry BU both inside and outside AkzoNobel in Houston area. Builds and maintains a network of business contacts in support of organizational objective. Conducts business in a responsible and ethical manner. Directs Responsible Community Advisory Program (CAP) initiatives.
- Able to exploit the asset, financial and human resources of AkzoNobel Houston site to meet and exceed targets and objectives. Stimulates HR development through teamwork, continuous improvement, productivity and cost awareness. Takes an interest in development of high potentials in organization.
- Delivers on implementation of LEAN standard work processes (ALPS) and foundational enablers (Lean 6 Sigma, Change Management, Visual Management, 5S) in Manufacturing, Quality, Maintenance and engineering.

Job requirements/Candidate profile

Ingredients for Success: What We Look For in You…
 

- Undergraduate degree in a technical discipline required
- Minimum 15 years of work experience in hazardous chemicals manufacturing role with minimum 5 years in operations management role
- Demonstrated track record of manufacturing achievement in the critical success areas of EH&S, cost reduction, continuous improvement, cycle time reduction, asset optimization, and application of leading edge methods and technologies.
- Track record for creating continuous improvements in the culture, facilities and technology.
- Excellent analytical/problem solving skills with ability to analyze complex technical, operational and financial data and develop effective solutions.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with and influence people at all levels in the organization, customers, suppliers and other external contacts that allows for achievement of substantial results through others.
- Demonstrated ability to focus employees at all levels to recognize the “right thing to do” and empower them to act decisively within their ability and area of responsibility. Demonstrated ability to build strong teams, coach, influence and guide employees, and the ability to recognize and develop talent throughout the organization as a means.







 
We also look for…..

- Degree in Chemical engineering preferred
- Master’s degree preferred
- Work experience in the chemical industry preferred
- L6S Black belt certification preferred
- Experience with lean manufacturing and/or Six Sigma certification preferred
- Demonstrated leadership experience in a minimum of four manufacturing roles preferred
