Organizational context
Within Research, Development & Innovation (RD&I) Deventer, Business Unit (BU) teams and the Strategic Research Group (SRG) work together to create value for the AkzoNobel businesses. We are a knowledge centre with more than 300 highly qualified R&D employees. BU teams are the customer-facing, applications-driven powerhouse of our Research & Development community whose task is to develop new products, create better processes for making them, and to support manufacturing, and the marketing and sales organizations. The BU teams are supported by teams of world-class scientists and engineers which are organized into three Strategic Research Group Departments: Process Technology (SRG-PT), Molecules & Materials Technology (SRG-MMT), and Measurement & Analytical Science (SRG-MAS). With clear understanding of business strategy, they perform longer range, strategic and underpinning research in business-led innovation programs and develop new, truly differentiating technology platforms that will drive the profitable organic growth of our company’s businesses. The SRG serves our organization worldwide.

The SRG Department Process Technology focuses on creating breakthrough processes and technologies, defining scale-up rules and optimizing existing processes. This group has excellent modelling tools for creating insight from nano - to plant scale and is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratory and pilot facilities.

Within this group we have a vacancy for a researcher.

Act as researcher within one of the teams in the SRG Process Technology, consisting of expert scientists and technologists who are deployed within BU innovation projects across the company. Deliver high quality scientific results in the innovation projects supporting the AkzoNobel Business Units. Ultimately, enabling the company to achieve leading science and technology positions that underpin the organic growth and cost productivity improvement strategies of the Specialty Chemicals, Decorative Paints and Performance Coatings businesses. More specifically the responsibility of a researcher includes:

• Creating sustainable innovations and shaping the must-haves of tomorrow through results-driven technology research
• Exploring alternative and novel technologies and process concepts, involving experimental programs and modelling
• Transforming initial concepts into practical solutions for AkzoNobel business units and our customers.
• Working within an inter-disciplinary, business-led team, your principal role will be to deliver cost-effective solutions on time, on target and on budget.
• Looking beyond the horizon, to identify and use the most appropriate technology to meet given project challenges
• Putting safety first and carrying out safety assessments
• Developing a deep and forward looking understanding of current and future markets of AkzoNobel and being able to identify new sustainable R&D projects
• Working with pace and scientific rigour in interpretation and analysis of experimental data, modelling results, deducing insights and recommending for further work
• Explaining, presenting and reporting project results, project plans and proposals.

Job requirements / Candidate profile
• Proven expertise in process technology (PhD in Chemical Technology)
• Strong skills in R&D
• A passion for research combined with a drive to bring the developed technology into our plants
• Preferably thorough insight and expertise in chemical reaction engineering or separation technology
• Applied Thermodynamics background and experience is desired.
• Preferably experience in leading projects, work collaboratively across boundaries
• Communication skills necessary to carry out and lead projects, while working collaboratively across boundaries.
• Able to think differently and continuously strives to improve and develop
