In the position of Sr. Color Specialist at Akzo Nobel Coatings Inc. the applicant will develop, test, and refine color product formulations for the Global Automotive Industry, Commercial Vehicle, and Sign Segments. Approve Mixing Machine/Ready Mix formulas. Interpret intermediate results from color measurements, formula calculations, and sprayed formula. Develop color formulas thru the use of microscopic evaluations to assist in the creation of innovative special effect pigments like colorstream, xirallic, variocrome, liquid crystal, spectra flair, cromaflair, etc. Apply understanding of the chemistry and physical properties of organic and inorganic pigments and dispersion techniques. Process and validate formula change requests and update appropriate databases of approved formulas. Provide expert level advice on color matching issues and develop formulations according to set priorities and quantities needed. Adhere to applicable health, safety, and environmental requirements. Provide necessary lab documentation and assist with any audits to support ISO 14001 and TS16949 certifications. Handle robotic paint spraying instruments, Spectrophotometer, and various other instruments for measurement of film thickness, gloss, shade and computerized instrumental color matching. Ability to covert digital color readings into automotive coating formulas. Issue analysis, testing of coloristic properties of pigments, and technical support to the commercial team. Experience with creation and support of color digitization processes. Participate and provide expert level guidance to color team members for training purposes.

Job requirements/Candidate profile

Master’s degree or equivalent in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field and 2 years of experience (or Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of experience) in research, development, and identification of micas and pigments for the creation of color formulas for vehicle refinishes, commercial vehicles, and signs. Stated experience must include: color matching procedures used globally in the coatings industry; automotive solvent-born and water-born basecoat and clearcoat systems and single stage top coats; and experience working in global labs.
