One of our Specialty Chemical business units, Surface Chemistry has an outstanding opportunity for a passionate, experienced professional to assume the role of Site Director in Salisbury, NC.
 
Job context:
The Akzo Nobel Surface Chemistry business unit manufactures a complex product line of over 800 products and formulations for the Petroleum, Agricultural, Mining, Detergent, Personal Care, Industrial and Institutional Cleaning markets.  Business has been primarily formulation driven and manufacturing expertise and service is critical to ensure value is delivered to the customer.
 
Purpose/key objective of the position:
- Develops and proposes plans for Manufacturing Plant in line with the AkzoNobel and BU Surface Chemistry strategy. Develops operational action plans and implements controls which assure targets are met and business opportunities are identified, assessed and implemented within the framework of the global strategy of the business.
- Oversees Salisbury manufacturing site, in order to realize targets for investment and return (EVA, FMC, NIC), both short and long term. Direct responsibility to plant, production, quality control, quality services, safety, health, environmental, maintenance and engineering, Matrix responsibility for HR and Control functions at the site.
-  Develops strategy and action plans for operational, technological and technical development of processes and assures plans are implemented and controlled as approved.
-  Performance management and development of site management team and subordinates
-  Ensures compliance with relevant legislation and AkzoNobel policy and rules of conduct concerning safety, health, environmental and regulatory affairs.  Acts as spokesperson   to the authorities regarding plant operations. Leads execution of Quality Management System programs in Salisbury; e.g. ISO9001, RC14000, EFfCI GMP, and Halal

Functional network:    Lead the Site Management Team. Site representative of the business unit to service units (CI, SCM, HR, Legal, HSE and PSRA, Finance and Control) at the Salsibury site. Work closely with site HR business partners and site HSE manager to ensure safe and effective operation of site.  Lead Quality Management System programs; e.g. ISO9001, RC14000. Alignment and sharing of best practice with other Site Managers within the region and on a global basis for the BU.
 
Main Technologies: Solution Polymer Polymerizations. Solvent Recovery Systems, Solid/Liquid Separation, and Drying Technologies, Powder Handling and Processing, Monomer Intermediates.
 
Main Products:  Cellulose Polyquaturnium Polymers, Acrylate based Polymers for Hair Spray and Hair Styling, Moisturizing Polymers for Skin Care Applications, and Sulfonated Polystyrene Polymers for Industrial Applications.
 
Principal accountabilities/critical objectives:
- Supports the company and Business Unit Surface Chemistry vision, mission, shared values, strategies and objectives through effective Plant Operations Management.
- Communicates and promotes the approved BU-strategy and develops plans and budgets for plant and integrates these into Site mission, strategy and objectives.  Recommends and upon approval implements policy regarding plant operations.
- Directs implementation of plans and attainment of process improvement including technical development.  Lead/direct/engage planning, control, information management and reporting for the site.  Identifies and analyzes changing business conditions and production performance and undertakes timely corrective action to optimize performance. Ensures an environment and culture of continuous improvement and leads improvement process.
- Ensures effective use of production capacity and continued productivity increases while meeting requirements for quality, cost control, safety and environment.  Assures the responsible use of physical plants and production capacity.  Ensures that products meet requirements of safety, health and environment in transportation and use.
- Responsible as business owner for safe, on plan and schedule execution of capital projects on the site.
- Fulfill the responsibilities of the Site Operating Manager with reference to AkzoNobel HSE&S Manual. Ensures site operation is aligned with OSHA PSM requirements.
- Creates optimal conditions for the functions and personnel directed.  Designs and implements a clear organization, reporting and communication structure that makes optimal use of available Human Resources.
- With Human resource function and functional leaders, sets challenging but achievable targets and objectives for plant personnel in line with business objectives.  Manage performance routinely utilizing Akzo Nobel performance dialog system and more routine follow up with leading indicators. Keep employee engagement at high level and represent Akzo Nobel core values.
- Represents the Surface Chemistry BU both inside and outside AkzoNobel in Salisbury and surrounding community.  Builds and maintains a network of business contacts in support of organizational objective.  Conducts business in a responsible and ethical manner.  Directs Responsible Community Advisory Program (CAP) initiatives.
- Able to exploit the asset, financial and human resources of AkzoNobel Salisbury site to meet and exceed targets and objectives. Stimulates HR development through teamwork, continuous improvement, productivity and cost awareness.  Takes an interest in development of high potentials in organization.
- Delivers on implementation of LEAN standard work processes (ALPS) and foundational enablers (Lean 6 Sigma, Change Management, Visual Management, 5S) in Manufacturing, Quality, Maintenance and Engineering.
- Manages 3rd party relationship in Industrial Park setting through established Site Service Agreements.

Job requirements/Candidate profile

Experience:   
- Minimum 15 years’ experience in a hazardous chemicals manufacturing role with minimum 5 year in operations management role. L6S Black belt certification preferred.
- Experience with Chemical operations involving hazardous materials and potentially dangerous reactions in both manual and automated processing environments.
 
Education:      
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering (preferred) or a closely related field required.  MBA preferred.
- L6S Black Belt Certification preferred.
 
Proficiency:    
- Product knowledge, Standardized work processes/ business processes, project management, ERP, ISO Standards, Site and Corporate Safety, Union and labor relations
