AkzoNobel Inc.–has an outstanding opportunity for a Benefit Specialist  
to administer all Leave of Absence plans including FMLA, ADAAA, STD and LTD plans for active business units and closed/sold operations. 
 
Responsibilities:
 
- Resolving customer issues escalated through the HR Shared Service Center, acting as Subject Matter Expert in benefit plans, especially Leave of Absence/FMLA, STD and LTD. 
- Daily communication/updates with HRBP, site manager and employees on claim status including follow-up on missing claim information, coordinating Return to Work (RTW) and advising site managers and HRBP on next steps to ensure compliance. Involving in-house counsel, when necessary.
- Work directly with the HRBP, site manager and employee on the Interactive Process specific to RTW and ADAAA.
- Oversee the implementation of programs with disability carrier or any changes to the system
- Provide Business Unit with reports on all open claim statuses for their specific locations
- Collecting and providing carrier with the requested and/or missing leave/disability information
- Coordinating second or third medical opinion with in-house physician or external provider
- Periodic audit of the HR system to ensure disability eligibility data is accurate
- Review and approval of STD payments to payroll including the audit of state disability plans offsets
- Timely notification to carrier on union disability payment increases as a result of union negotiations. 
- Review and distribution/posting of Summary Plan Description booklets for all leave plans including salaried and union hourly.  Ensure employee portal is up to date with benefit plan information.
- Ensure Shared Service Representatives are notified of any changes to plans
- Process weekly funding for union Accident & Sickness benefit payments in addition to the monthly allocation
- Monitor LTD claim status and notify both business unit and employee of approval/denials. This includes calculation of final pay, benefit eligibility, and where applicable, employment status.
- Coordinate transition from LTD to retirement with the retirement area
- Assist LTD employees with transition to Medicare including notification and overall communication on benefit status  
- Coordinate LTD billing with outsource vendor
- Weekly eligibility file feeds to carrier
- Coordinate the employee’s RTW ensuring compliance with HSE and providing notification to site manager.
- Monitoring and tracking employee’s pay during an intermittent FMLA leave of absence in eTime and providing the employee with required notification/information
- Manage the entire LTD annual enrollment process for current employees and LTD employees with prior carriers including developing and distribution of materials
- Timely LTD billing account updates due to AE and/or life event changes
- LTD billing non-payment report monitoring and notification to employees who are in danger of being cancelled due to non-payment.
-  Administer and assist with the implementation of new benefit plans, payment of premiums, charge back/allocation of claims data, and assisting with the on going communication to employees and business unit HR partners.

Job requirements/Candidate profile

 
- Bachelor’s degree preferred; but not required
- Minimum of three (3) years of Health & Welfare (H&W) experience with emphasis on disability including state disability plans.
- Proficiency with computer applications (Microsoft Office/Excel, MyHR, HWSE)
- Ability to manage multiple projects at once 
- Ability to work independently and have the flexibility to meet continuous changing demands/goals
- Ability to communicate at all levels, both written and verbally
- Customer service experience/excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact with diverse population.  Being Tactful and a mediator when necessary. 
- Thorough knowledge of federal and state employment laws and state disability plans.  
- Ability to influence/negotiate and resolve conflicts. 
- Must be very good at multi-tasking yet keeping attention to detail. 
- Good organizational skills.
