Responsibility

AkzoNobel Specialty Chemicals currently has an opening for a Sr. Process Engineer at our Houston, TX location. This position is part of the Projects & Engineering (P&E) unit of AkzoNobel Specialty Chemicals which provides engineering and manufacturing support to AkzoNobel’s Specialty Chemical businesses.
 
Projects & Engineering (P&E) is AkzoNobel Specialty Chemicals’s center of excellence in the field of project management and engineering.   P&E provides engineering and manufacturing support to several Business Units. By delivering investment projects and optimizing current operations that secure AkzoNobel’s HSE&S and eco- efficiency performance we create business value for AkzoNobel Specialty Chemicals and selected external customers.
 
Besides your own USA based team your work will include contacts and cooperation with approximately 180 highly skilled technical P&E professionals who work from our offices in Brazil, China, India, the Netherlands and Sweden.

This position will provide process engineering for both capital and non-capital projects and may require domestic and international travel. The project costs will range from $10MM - $30MM.

Reports To: P&E Americas Process Technology Team Leader
 
Responsibilities:

- Conduct process studies including conceptual design, development, and optimization of new and modification of existing production processes by analyzing, advising, and implementing integrated solutions.
- Based on customer demands, define the scope of work, prepare the basis of design, and be responsible for the integral process design.
- Ensure efficient production processes and maximize the reliability, quality, safety, sustainability, and efficiency of installations at the optimum level of costs.
- Execute own work through efficient and effective work processes in accordance with HSE and operations guidelines, site infrastructure regulatory requirements, and internal/international standards.
- Collect, interpret, and edit process related data, including new process data from RD&I, execute risk assessments of new installation/equipment, and issue advice for needed changes at request or at own initiative.
- Produce stream-by-stream material and heat balances for both batch and continuous processes. Prepare block flow diagrams (BFDs) and process flow diagrams (PFDs).
- Prepare process function descriptions as base for control system configuration and SOP.
- Prepare piping and Instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) with control strategy & instrument selection.
- Prepare Front End Loading (FEL) Basic Engineering Package (BEP) or FEED packages.
- Prepare equipment specifications and provide procurement support.
- Support detail engineering, construction, commissioning and plant startup when required.
- Plan, budget, and track own discipline to ensure safe execution and delivery within time, budget, and quality. 
- Define, plan, manage, and coordinate personnel assigned, and may lead and supervise a process engineering team during different project phases.
- Apply engineering standards and procedures, and if necessary, develop or contribute to new guidelines.
- Advise on preventative and/or corrective maintenance activities on assigned installations/equipment from a process engineering perspective.
- Document and report to management for activities performed by periodic and ad hoc reports and/or analyses that are timely prepared to company reporting standards.  Make presentations using PowerPoint.
- Be familiar with Aspen and other relevant softwares for process calculations.
- Support budget or AR funding cost estimate.
- Participate in HAZOP & other studies following OSHA PSM, company standards, and applicable codes.

Job requirements/Candidate profile


- A Bachelors or Master’s degree (preferred) in Chemical Engineering
- 10 years minimum of relevant experience in engineering or manufacturing environment in the chemical industry
- Excellent knowledge of chemical process engineering and has basic knowledge of related disciplines
- Strong communication skills in both verbal and written English language
- Self-starter, quick learner, ability to work independently as well as in a team, and result oriented.
- Ability to work in (or lead) multi-functional/multi organizational teams with good interpersonal skills
- Physically capable of field work and site walk in an operating chemical plant that handles hazardous chemicals
- Analytical and problem solving skills
- Flexible work style
