Preventing material degradation
Colloidal silica can be used as a binder in zinc-rich coatings to produce hard, durable, protective coatings that shield steel and prevent corrosion in construction environments. At the same time, colloidal silica is facilitating the conversion from Cr VI to Cr III in electroplating industries.
For zinc-rich and shop-primer coatings, colloidal silica is an excellent binder for producing mechanically stronger coatings that possess excellent welding properties, as well as resist damage and corrosion. These protective coatings provide ideal protection for steel used in construction.
For health and safety reasons, there has been a movement away from using hexavalent chrome (Cr VI) in electroplating processes. Until recently Cr III-based films could not match the performance of Cr VI-based films, at least in terms of corrosion protection and self-healing characteristics.
But things have changed thanks to colloidal silica. Colloidal silica has been found to improve the performance of Cr III to near Cr VI standards with the extra benefit of ionic stabilization without adversely affecting bath performance.
