Improving the effectiveness of dispersions

Pigments and fillers are materials used primarily in the paint and coatings industry. By using colloidal silica as a dispersant, pure inorganic dispersions can be made without using surfactants or other organic compounds that can negatively affect paint properties. In addition, colloidal silica is easy to use and not shear sensitive.

Well-dispersed pigments and fillers give better color strength and intensity to paints, thereby improving their cost efficiency. Although surfactants and polyacrylates have been used as dispersants for years, colloidal silica is quickly becoming a preferred dispersing agent for inorganic pigments and fillers.

When a dry pigment or filler is dispersed in colloidal silica, the small charged silica particles are adsorbed on the surface of the pigment or filler particles, acting as a dispersant in the wet stage and also as a spacer keeping particles separated even in the dry paint film. This action produces a long-term stable dispersion and also greatly increases its light scattering efficiency and hence the paint hiding power.

Thanks to its effectiveness as a dispersant, colloidal silica helps minimize surfactant usage, leading to improved chemical and weather resistance of paint. Additionally, colloidal silica – unlike surfactants – does not promote foam production, thereby reducing the need for a de-foamer. Finally, colloidal silica can also enhance other paint properties like dirt pick-up resistance and substrate adhesion.
