Chemical Island

A partnership for complex chemical plant projects

We help our pulp mill customers become more profitable and sustainable by offering comprehensive and customer-specific business models, in addition to developing chemical applications for efficient, cost-effective pulp production.

One such business model is our innovative Chemical Island – a state-of-the-art facility located next to a customer's pulp mill, often inside the perimeter fence. With a full-scale Chemical Island in place, our customers benefit from a tried, tested and successful concept managed and operated – on site, 24/7 – by our experts who ensure consistent production and delivery of chemicals needed to operate the mill. At a typical Chemical Island, we manufacture sodium chlorate and generate chlorine dioxide that is then pumped directly to a pulp mill. Depending on the customers' needs, we can also manage all the logistics for the other chemicals required for their pulp mill operation.

An Eco-premium solution
Modern pulp mills normally generate excess utilities (e.g., such as steam and water from the pulping process) that can be used as fuel in other manufacturing processes. Often our Chemical Islands use power sourced from biomass, these reused resources effectively lower the carbon footprint of a Chemical Island, while simultaneously producing chemicals more efficiently. Simultaneously, on-site sodium chlorate production reduces transportation requirements. The combined result is what we call an Eco-premium solution – efficient, safe, and sustainable production and delivery of bleaching chemicals, while reducing environmental impact and providing socio-environmental opportunities.

Chemical Islands have proven popular and successful in Brazil. The first one – our Bahia plant at the Veracel Celulose Pulp Mill – was brought on line in 2005. Most recently, the Imperatriz Chemical Island was opened in May 2014 to service the Maranhão Pulp Mill in northern Brazil. Deciding when and where to build a Chemical Island is complex and many factors must to be considered. We work with every customer to determine the best solutions for their needs.

Typical benefits of a Chemical Island
  • Sustainable manufacturing processes, reducing environmental footprint
  • Dedicated partner, managing all customers' chemical handling requirements
  • Proximity to customer point-of-use reduces transportation, increasing eco-efficiency and safety
  • Energy derives from the pulp mill (e.g., energy produced from biomass)
  • Shared services with the pulp mill (e.g., security, entrance, scale, canteen), enabling cost optimization
  • Local jobs created, positively impacting the community
  • Long-term contract, commitment and partnership
