Reduced energy consumption of coated objects

  • AkzoNobel provides performance coatings to many markets including transportation, construction and industrial markets.  Performance functions include anti-corrosion, anti-abrasion, antifouling and chemical resistance. The coatings are applied to many different substrates including steel, tinplate, concrete, aluminium, plastics and composites

  • Fuel is required for transportation and providing thermal stability e.g. in storage/living areas. Reducing end-user fuel/energy consumption should be taken into account when considering the in-service sustainability of products

  • Typically insulation coatings/systems tend to be lower density/thicker film builds. Coatings with insulation characteristics are available but are typically thinly applied and do not match the performance of mineral wool

  • Sunlight can lead to increased internal temperatures and subsequent increases in energy usage e.g. air conditioning. To reduce impact of sunlight, low solar absorption (LSA) or reflective pigmentation can be incorporated into coatings

  • For Marine vessels, increase in surface roughness e.g. fouling build-up can lead to higher fuel/energy consumption. Foul release and biocidal products are sold on the basis of drag reduction. For example, an ultra-smooth/drag reducing surface of a coating on a ships hull may enable the ship to use less fuel/energy and reduce the associated emissions of pollutants, which will improve the sustainability of our customers operation:

Approaches may include, but are not limited to those employed in coatings to:
  • Significantly reduce hydrodynamic drag 
  • Manage water or airflow over a surface to give performance improvement
  • Provide easy clean solutions
  • Increase solar reflectance or reduce solar absorption
  • Improve thermal insulation properties 
  • Reduce density of systems e.g. for Marine vessels lighter weight = better fuel efficiency
